Does Metal Roofing Rust?
2 December, 2020
Metal roofing has soared in popularity — and it’s not hard to see why. Metal roofs are long-lasting and energy-efficient, plus resistant to fire, pests and harsh weather conditions. They’re available in a range of styles and can be customised in a variety of colours. Oh, and did we mention they’re affordable, too?

But despite their long, long list of features and benefits, metal roofing is often avoided out of fear that it will rust. In this article, we set the record straight. Discover how and why metal roofs enjoy long lifespans without rusting.
Do all metal roofs rust?
It is a misconception that all metal rusts. Only metals that contain iron will rust. This is because rusting is a chemical reaction that occurs when iron reacts with oxygen and water. The chemical reaction combines iron, oxygen and water to produce hydrated iron oxide, a bronze-coloured substance that can weaken the metal and ruin its aesthetic.
Will a steel roof rust?
Steel is an iron alloy and is therefore susceptible to rust. However, this does not mean that a steel roof will be susceptible to rust.
A steel roof will typically be composed of either one of two types of steel: stainless or galvanised.
Stainless steel does not rust. Despite containing iron, the addition of chromium in its composition makes it rust-resistant.
Galvanised steel is not rust resistant but is usually treated with a rust-resistant coating during the manufacturing process. These coatings may include:
- Zinc
- Aluminium
- A combination of zinc, silicon and aluminium
How long do the protective coatings last?
There are various factors that will affect how long a rust-resistant coating will last.
It is generally suggested that you recoat your treated metal roof every 5-12 years. However, galvanised steel treated with a zinc coating will typically last between 25-50 years before needing to be replaced or recoated.
Another option is to bypass the galvanised steel altogether and opt for a roof made entirely of zinc.
